Sensei Bernardo
Karate Training and Certifications:
- Started Shotokan Karate with Sensei Mayer Parry at San Francisco State University in
1981. Earned 3rd kyu in 1983.
- Continued training with Sensei Leroy Rodrigues in 1983 at Shinkyu Shotokan South
San Francisco Parks & Recreation Center. Earned Shodan in 1986. Awarded Godan in
2002. Also awarded Nidan in Shrinji Ryu Karate-Do in 1986. Started teaching in 1986 at
the Shinkyu Shotokan dojo.
- Enhanced training with Sensei Al McGaughey beginning in 1998. Awarded rank of
Sensei and Senior Instructor at Pine Waves Karate Academy in 2003.
- Hold the rank of Sandan (3rd Degree Black Belt) with the International Society of
Okinawan Karate Instructors.
- Achieved the rank of Yondan (4th Degree Black Belt) with the Shinkyu Shotokan Karate
in March 23, 1994.
- Achieved the rank of Godan (5th Degree Black Belt) with the Shinkyu Shotokan Karate in
October 13, 2002
- Achieved the rank of Godan (5th Degree Black Belt) with the International Society of
Okinawan / Japanese Karate-Do in June 7, 2006
- Achieved the rank of Rokudan (6th Degree Black Belt) with the Shinkyu Shotokan Karate
in June 2007
Championships:
- Began competing in 1983 as a brown belt and took first place in kumite. Have competed
since 1983 in many local and regional karate tournaments consistently placing in the
top three finalists in both kata and kumite. That includes winning the Northern California
Karate Championships, Kanazawa Cup, and Grand Champion in the All American
ATAMA Classic.
